The Alex Theatre is a historic landmark at 216 North Brand Boulevard in the heart of downtown Glendale, California. It opened on September 4, 1925, as the Alexander Theatre, a vaudeville house and movie palace, and became the Alex in 1940 when its Art Deco marquee and neon tower were added. It showed first-run films for about 60 years before closing in 1991. After a $6.5 million restoration, it reopened on December 31, 1993, as a performing arts center. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, the Alex hosts concerts, dance, comedy, special events and film screenings, including classic films and 70mm presentations.
