The entire original A-list cast dropped out and was replaced. When the film was announced in 2022, Rosamund Pike, Daniel Brühl, and Macaulay Culkin were all set to star. By early 2023, all three had exited due to scheduling conflicts, and the roles were recast with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rafe Spall, Timothy Spall, Lorraine Bracco, and Jonah Hauer-King.
It was filmed across three countries on two continents. Principal photography took place in Barcelona and Fuerteventura in Spain, as well as in Senegal — making it a genuinely international production for a mid-budget Spanish thriller.
It's the follow-up from the director of The Platform. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the film through his Basque Films banner, returning to the high-concept dystopian satire that made his 2019 Netflix hit a global phenomenon
Pablo Larraín's production company Fabula co-produced it. The Chilean production house run by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín — known for prestige dramas like Spencer and Jackie — backed this English-language Spanish thriller, an unusual genre pivot for the Oscar-nominated production banner.
