Ninja Scroll is a 1993 Japanese animated action fantasy written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri for Animate Film, back in North American cinemas in a 4K restoration.
Mercenary swordsman Kibagami Jubei (Kôichi Yamadera) crosses paths with Kagero (Emi Shinohara), a kunoichi who survives a mass poisoning because her own body is laced with toxins, and with Dakuan (Takeshi Aono), a government spy who poisons Jubei to force his cooperation. The three move against the Eight Devils of Kimon, supernaturally gifted ninja working to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate under Himuro Gemma (Daisuke Gôri), a figure from Jubei's past he believes is long dead.
Kaoru Wada scored it, Hitoshi Yamaguchi shot it, and Shigeru Kitayama, Masako Fukuyo and Kazuhiko Ikeguchi produced.
The runtime is 94 minutes. Manga Entertainment's 1995 English dub features Dean Wein, Wendee Lee and Steve Apostolina. Iconic Events, partnering with AMC, is running the 2026 restoration on 4, 5 and 7 October, scanned in 4K from the original 35mm negatives with damage repair and colour correction.
For viewers who want the film that carried adult anime into Western theatres alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and for anyone tracing The Matrix back to its sources.
