Two young men wager that their fiancées could never be unfaithful. Coached by a cynical older friend, they fake a departure, return in disguise and set out to court each other's partner, with a sharp-eyed maid paid to help the scheme along. What starts as a joke at the women's expense becomes something none of the four can unknow. Mozart's comedy of fidelity, vanity and self-deception, on a 1950s Coney Island boardwalk.

Mozart: Così fan tutte is a 2026 cinema transmission in The Met: Live in HD series, presenting Phelim McDermott's Metropolitan Opera staging of the 1790 opera, with Nimrod David Pfeffer conducting and Gary Halvorson directing for the screen.
Don Alfonso (Gerald Finley) bets Ferrando (Duke Kim) and Guglielmo (Andrey Zhilikhovsky) that their fiancées will not stay faithful, so the two men stage a departure for war and come back disguised to court each other's intended. Fiordiligi (Federica Lombardi) and Dorabella (Samantha Hankey) hold the line for a time, with the maid Despina (Ana María Martínez) paid to help the deception along.
McDermott places the piece in a 1950s Coney Island amusement park, with sets by Tom Pye, costumes by Laura Hopkins, lighting by Paule Constable and a company of working sideshow and circus performers. Soprano Christine Goerke hosts, with backstage features and intermission interviews.
Fathom Entertainment carried the live transmission to roughly 650 US theatres on 3 October 2026, with encores on 7 October at 1:00pm and 6:30pm local time. The running time is 3 hours 57 minutes, sung in Italian. For opera audiences and for anyone who wants a full Met production without the trip to Lincoln Center.
