Plot Summary

A Girl Unknown narrates the life journey of a young girl who, within the span of her 18 years, has been a part of three distinct families, each bestowing upon her a different name: LIN Juan, WANG Juan, and WU Lian. She's given away after birth to the LIN family. Following the death of Father LIN and Mother LIN's decision to remarry and start anew, she is sent to live with the WANG family for the summer, only to be abandoned by her mother. In the midst of her confusion and heartache, LIN Juan, now renamed WANG Juan, adapts to her new home. However, she can't shake the feeling that there's a pervasive darkness within the WANG household, a tension that stems from the fractured relationship between her adoptive parents. Her transition from a naive and spirited child to a troubled adolescent is marked by the agonizing sense of loss, isolation, and a deep-seated insecurity. While she shares a cordial bond with her adoptive mother, Ding, her relationship with her adoptive father, Qiang, is fraught with ambiguity. The situation takes a turn for the worse when, at 16, she endures an unsettling encounter of sexual harassment with Liao, a business associate of Qiang. This traumatic event remains a closely guarded secret. Her world is further upended at 17 when her biological family locates her. Only then she comes to realize that LIN family is not her birth family and she has been abandoned twice. Disillusioned with the complexities of her life in the WANG family, she chooses to leave with them. Upon returning to her roots, she learns of her true identity as WU Lian and discovers she has an older sister and a younger brother. However, feeling alienated in her own home, she departs to work in a factory hoping to start her life anew. In the factory she forms a close friendship with a girl named Fang Fang. Their friendship ends abruptly following a sensitive dispute and Fang Fang decides to go back to her hometown on her mother's request to marry someone she hasn't met. Still embarrassed by what happened between them, WU Lian doesn't say goodbye. The next day WU Lian finds Fang Fang has committed suicide. Blaming herself in part for her friend's demise, WU Lian reaches out to mother Ding, who rushes to her side. Overcome with guilt and rage at the series of misfortunes that have befallen her, including the loss of Fang Fang and her own experiences of abandonment and strangeness with her birth family, WU Lian reaches a breaking point and attempts suicide at home, only to be saved by Father Qiang. While taking care of WU Lian in the hospital, the pain of having lost a child once again strikes Ding. She can no longer control herself, and the pain that had been suppressed and hidden for many years erupts at this moment. Qiang finally opens his heart to Ding, and the estrangement between the two begins to dissolve.Afterward, WU Lian returns to school and her relationship with Qiang also gradually reconciles, and life seems to be back on track. In a significant turn of events, Qiang invites Ding and WU Lian to a dinner with his friends, where they unexpectedly encounter Liao and his family. Amidst the conversation, WU Lian confronts her past, violently assaulting Liao with a bottle, marking a moment of raw, unfiltered anger and defiance. In the end, WU Lian, Ding, and Qiang sit on a beach, closely together. WU Lian stands up and walks to the waves. The thunderstormstarts pouring down.
