Rachel Morrison is a widely respected cinematographer who was the first woman nominated for a Best Cinematography Oscar and who has made the jump into directing—first in television in 2015, and then nine years later in features. Morrison’s notable feature cinematography achievements include indie filmmaker Amos Poe’s Just An American Boy (2003), Zal Batmanglij’s Sound of My Voice (2011), Ryan Coogler’s award-winning Fruitvale Station (2013), John McNaughton’s The Harvest (2013), Rick Famuyiwa’s Los Angeles-set comedy-drama Dope (2015), Dee Rees’ period drama Mudbound (2017), Coogler’s Marvel Studio smash hit Black Panther (2018) and Benedict Andrews’ biopic Seberg (2019).

Morrison made her feature directorial debut (after episodic television directing assignments on the shows Quantico (2015), American Crime (2015-2016), Homemade (2020), Hightown (2020-2021), The Morning Show (2021), American Crime Story (2021) and The Mandalorian (2023)) with the biopic on Olympian boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, The Fire Inside (2024), co-starring Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry, and which was released wide by Amazon MGM Studios after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.

Personal life

Rachel Morrison was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts by her parents. Morrison attended and graduated from Concord Academy. Morrison then studied filmmaking and photography at the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and then landed a position as a cinematography fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory, graduating with an MFA in 2006. Morrison has been married to Rachel Garza since 2011; the couple has two children, a son and a daughter.
