While Lenny Kravitz (birthname: Leonard Albert Kravitz) is best known as a singer-composer blending psychedelic-inflected rock with soul, he has also acted in a range of movies, mainly those by writer-producer-director Lee Daniels and the Hunger Games franchise. His first movie appearance was off-screen, as a voice performer in The Rugrats Movie (1998), for which he was nominated in the Kids' Choice Awards for Best Cameo Voice in an Animated Film.

Kravitz played himself in Ben Stiller’s spoof, Zoolander (2001), with Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell. Kravitz repeated the stunt in Julian Schnabel’s Cannes-premiering drama based on Jean-Dominique Bauby’s biography, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), with Mathieu Almaric and Emmanuelle Seigner. In 2009, under Daniels’ direction, Kravitz played his first fictional role as a male nurse in the Sundance triumph, Precious (2009), with Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, and Mariah Carey, which earned Kravitz and his cast a Screen Actors Guild nomination as Best Cast.

Kravitz was cast as Cinna in The Hunger Games (2012), with Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Stanley Tucci. He resumed the role in the sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), which, combined with the first film, earned a worldwide gross of nearly $1.6 billion. Kravitz reunited with Lee Daniels for his comedy-drama, The Butler (2013), with Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, David Oyelowo, and Terrence Howard, earning a second Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Cast. In 2022, Lenny Kravitz appears in a co-starring role in the romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding, with Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, and Cheech Marin.

Born a New Yorker, and raised by father and TV news producer Sy Kravitz and actor mother Roxie Roker, Lenny Kravitz attended P.S. 6 school. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1974, where Kravitz joined the California Boys Choir, and later attended Beverly Hills High School, where his fellow students included Nicolas Cage, Slash, and Maria McKee. Through his father, who was also a jazz promoter, young Kravitz met many legendary musicians, including Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Miles Davis, who would prove to be a major creative influence. Kravitz’s relatives include NBC weatherman Al Roker (second cousin), and Formula One broadcaster Ted Kravitz (cousin); his honorary aunt was actor Diahann Carroll, and his godmother was late actor Cicely Tyson. Kravitz was married to actor Lisa Bonet from 1987 to 1993; the couple has one child, actor Zoë Kravitz. Kravitz was briefly engaged to Brazilian model Adriana Lima. His height is 5’ 9”. Kravitz’s net worth is estimated to be between $75 and $90 million.
